Trying to choose books for your children that are high quality, fun, educational, and all the things, can be a pretty daunting and overwhelming thought!

Part of buying kids toys, teaching kids, and raising children to love learning, means having a well developed kids library. For some, this comes naturally. Maybe you are a book lover yourself and can’t enough of any books, including kids books! However, for others, this can seem very daunting. Where to start?
In this post, I hope to give you a place to start and a little bit of direction to get you started on building a library for your child!
Building a Kids Book Library
Keep it Classic
One of the best places to start, is with the classics. Books like Dr. Seuss, the Berenstain Bears, Winnie the Pooh, Eric Carle, just to name a few. These books have intentional stories and wording that are designed to engage your child’s mind and teach them new concepts through a story. Dr. Seuss teaches rhyming, alliteration, and imagination. It also teaches deeper concepts like kindness and perseverance through whimsical tales. Berenstain Bears tackles family and life challenges through fun, charming characters.
Basically, you can’t go wrong with a classic!
Educational Fiction
Look for books that teach concepts such as letters, numbers, shapes, days of the week, seasons, adding, subtracting, etc. through a story. Children need to learn through the experiences of others. Learning through books is a fantastic way to introduce them to that concept! Some great books for are Chicka Chicka Boom Boom or Alphabet Adventure or The Day the Crayons Quit. That bring the letters to life.
Non-Fiction Books
It’s very tempting to just get fun stories and cute books for our kids. And there is so much benefit to reading those books, as we have mentioned previously in this post! However, you would be surprised how much kids can enjoy non fiction, factual books about animals, or truck, or flowers, or whatever they are interested in. I’ve especially noticed that giving these books to a child about a topic they are very interested in, will really get them engrossed in a book! The love to be able to study in depth about a topic. For example, if they are interested in tigers, they don’t just want to read about a tiger in a story book. They want to see a book filled with tigers and read all about them!
Get Quirky
Just following the first three categories will give you an amazing library of books. However, some other books that are fun to get are books that are a little less regular! Things children’s encyclopedias, books like The Book With No Pictures or What To Do With An Idea. Keep the fun, out of the box books coming in!
Where to Find Books
Now that you know what you are looking for, let’s talk about where to find them. Facebook marketplace, thrift stores, are amazing places to find books. Especially for finding books that you want to own. These places also tend to have very reasonable and budget friendly prices.
Another place that amazing and grossly under utilized, is the public library! GO TO THE LIBRARY! Most libraries have a weekly story time too that kids love! Use this to bring a lot more titles into your home than you could ever own, and all for free!
In conclusion, building a kids library should include classics, educational fiction, non fiction, and other stories or fun books. You might say, isn’t that basically all the types of books? Pretty much! But this just breaks it down and makes it easier to find the books you want and need.
