Are you looking for something to do with your toddler on a cold winter day, when you’ve all been cooped up for far too long?

There is nothing like a winter storm to give everyone cabin fever. And if you have toddlers? Everything is that much worse! We just had a winter storm here. It was very cold, snowy, icy and absolutely not the time to playing outside! We weren’t able to drive anywhere for several days and had a couple days where we couldn’t even go outside. With a baby and toddler in the house, we had to creative to keep everyone active and not going stir crazy!
In case there are any other parents in the same situation, I want to share some of these activities with you in hopes they can be a help!
Winter Day Activities with Toddlers
Baking Together
This may seem kind of obvious. But, maybe you’re the type of mom who has a hard time letting your child participate in cooking or baking. I totally get it! It’s much more of a hindrance and distraction in the kitchen, than a help. Yet, it so fun for them, and so important for them to have those experiences. Take the time when you don’t need to be anywhere and don’t have a time crunch, to allow them to “help” in the kitchen!
Build a Blanket Fort
Now, this was a huge hit in our home recently, but also when I was a child growing up! It is an activity that is fun for children and adults! My husband and I both had fun crawling into the tent with our toddler. She loved making it her “home”. She loves to play with her animals and her baby doll. This was just a natural extension of that play! She was able to play with her baby doll taking her “shopping” the bringing her back “home”. It was a great activity!
Play a Card or Board Game
This is going to look different depending on your child’s age. Our toddler is only two and a half, so she is not ready for board games. However, we were able to teach her how to play memory with an ocean memory game she has. She was able to learn it and it was so much fun to watch her learn and get excited about it!
Obstacle Course
If your child is an active child and needs to be physically active, build an obstacle course for them! Give them a fun new way to play and get their energy out while being stuck indoors. As a mom, and homemaker, I know this kind of set up can really make a mess in the home. However, sometimes we really need to sacrifice order in our home to keep our children happy and do what is best for them!
Arts and Crafts
What better time to do arts and crafts than when you are stuck inside? Get out the paints, the colors, paper, glitter, pom poms, glue, and whatever else you would like! Be ready to make a mess and just have a blast with your child! Allow them to have a sensory activity.
These are just some ideas to get you started on enjoying the snow day with your child rather than being all cooped! The most important thing to remember is to take the time to be a family, slow down and play with your kids. Let’s view this as a gift rather than a hard time!
